The Eleventh Annual Jonathan B. Loden Golf Tournament – September 15, 2017
September 15, 2017, at Turf Valley, Ellicott City, Maryland was a perfect day for the Jonathan B. Loden Memorial Golf Tournament.
We have been very lucky in recent years concerning the weather, and this year was no exception! Temperatures were in the high seventies with little humidity, for the 11th Annual JBL Golf Tournament at Turf Valley.
Our volunteers, led by Sandy Cornelius, arrived bright and early to be ready to check in 124 golfers. We thank Janice Bloodsworth, Nicole Bruno, Amanda Carter, Gale Clark, Kathy Lebous, Vicky Norton, RoseAnn Preston, Ann Todd and Jen Trenary Todd for their help all day. Amber Baker took her usual amazing pictures on hole #2, and makes our tournament even more memorable with her “unusual” costumes. Sarah Trimmer and Megan Ward made the trip from Johns Hopkins, as well as Dr. Arlene Forastiere, who volunteers all day and then gives us the latest news about head and neck cancer research at the awards ceremony after the tournament.
Congratulations to all.
We must thank Wayne Croswell’s Crusaders for making the trip, once again, from New England. The JBL would never be as much fun without this crew keeping us guessing. The hole #10 pond and the swans at Turf Valley will never be the same! A special heartfelt thank you to Mark Smolenski who shared a few stories of growing up next door to Jonathan, and the adventures that they had together. Every year we have friends and family share memories of Jonathan for the benefit of those of us who knew him, and give some inside into his character for those who did not.
Dr. Forastiere shared with us this year the wonderful news that researchers really believe that they are on the cusp of learning how to prevent the disease that took Jonathan from us. It could be as simple as making sure that all girls AND boys are vaccinated against the HPV virus that can cause ovarian cancer and head and neck cancers. Make sure that your children and grandchildren are vaccinated!
In closing, with your help, the Jonathan B. Loden Foundation has donated over $120,000 to head and neck cancer research at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins. Every year, Dr. Forastiere is the recipient and decides which researcher will receive our gift. We have been proudly welcomed to the Century Circle Gift Club at Hopkins, and it has been with your help.
Thank you, and we will see you next year for the 12th Annual Jonathan B. Loden Tournament on September 14th, 2018 at Turf Valley!
