The Tenth Annual Jonathan B. Loden Golf Tournament – September 16, 2016
September 16, 2016, at Turf Valley, Ellicott City, Maryland was a perfect day for the tenth Jonathan B. Loden Memorial Golf Tournament. We were blessed with partly sunny skies and a high of 75 degrees and the tournament went off without a hitch….almost 130 golfers, again, this year. It is so heartening to have so many golfers come and play year after year, from all over the country, as well as newcomers that we hope will also come again! Thank you all for your support.
We must thank our dedicated volunteers: Sandy Davis, our volunteer coordinator, also, Jen Trenary Todd, Vicky Norton, RoseAnn Preston, Gale Clark, Judy Jensen, Megan Ward and Amber Hays, who also does double duty as our wonderful photographer! Brand new volunteers include Amanda Carter, Laura Puls and Lauren Wisniewski, and we hope that they will all be back next year. We appreciated the efforts of Mike Davies and John Stetz who came to offer support, chauffeur volunteers around and run errands for us during the tournament. Every year, we have a special friend or family member give us some personal reflections about their relationship with Jonathan at the award ceremony, since many people there never knew him. This year our speaker was Justin Garwood, and he did a great job sharing many humorous stories from years past. Thank you, Justin!
Our special volunteer is Dr. Arlene Forastiere, from the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Forastiere, who was Jonathan's oncologist, has been coming to volunteer for many years now. She hands out shirts in the morning, sits out on the course to be a witness if we have a hole in one, and then at the award ceremony gives us an update on the latest news in head and neck cancer research. We are very lucky to have her guide us as to where our foundation donations would be best served. This year, our recipient will be Hyunseok Kang, M.D., M.P.H. Dr. Kang has a long term commitment to his research to head and neck cancer, including squamous cell carcinoma and salivary gland cancer. The strides made in treating this horrible disease that took Jonathan from us much too soon have been truly amazing! Our past recipients, Dr. Maura Gillison and Dr. Christine Chung left their mark, and we are confident that Dr. Kang will, as well. Our goal is to be able to help prevent even one more death from head and neck cancer. It is our memorial to Jonathan.
Finally -- our 2016 winners:
