The Eighth Annual Jonathan B. Loden Golf Tournament – September 19, 2014 - Take Two
The weather was picture perfect on September 19th, 2014 for the Eighth Annual Jonathan B. Loden Memorial Golf Tournament at Turf Valley Resort and Country Club in Ellicott City, Maryland. The SECOND try was the charm for number eight….and the blue skies and crisp fall breezes enhanced the experience for everyone. It was a great day for golf!
We are happy to report that with 136 golfers, we were only two foursomes shy of a full field. In addition to local players, several other states could claim players--Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Maine, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Ohio….not to mention other countries! Canada and Northern Ireland were also represented.
Winners
1st Place: This year the winning foursome was Hank Warner’s team, with Frank Laber, Bob Ensey and Joe Wolf rounding out the foursome.
2nd Place: “Tiger’s Poor White Cousins- Dick Lombardo, his sons Brian and Andy, and Justin Garwood took second place.
For the last few years, we have awarded prizes to the foursome who scores fall directly in the middle.
Middle Place: This year, the distinction went to Graeme Todd, Drew Todd, Larry Goff, and Bill Waterfield, better known as Rory’s Older Brothers.
Highest Place: With bobble heads as prizes to prove it, the “Wine and Nine” team of Erica Loden, Carrie Boyce, Katie Guynn and Mia Winkley , came in last according to their scorecards, but that did not deter them from having a great time on the course.
Closest to the Pin on Hole #3: Bobby Johnson
Closest to the Pin Hole #13: Jack Rea
We use hole #5 for the longest drive contest. This years winners are...

The tournament could not go on without our volunteers, some who have been with us from the beginning. Sandy Cornelius, our volunteer coordinator, Jen Trenary Todd, Janice Bloodsworth and Vickie Norton, help out year after year. Amber Baker, our photographer, provided that service for us once again, as well as helping to make the wig and skirt hole even more hilarious with additional costumes. Ann Todd, was able to be with us again, as well as Megan LeDonne , our gift department liaison from Johns Hopkins. New this year was Roseann Preston and Nicole Bruno; hopefully we can count on their help next year as well.
A special member of our volunteer team is Dr. Arlene Forastiere, who was Jonathan’s doctor when he was treated at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins. She always gives us the latest news from Hopkins regarding head and neck cancer treatments, especially from Dr.Christine Chung, who is now the recipient of our donations for her groundbreaking research in this field. In the last few years Dr. Forastiere has come in the morning and has made herself available to help wherever we need her in the registration process’ and later on the course as a witness in case someone is lucky enough to get a hole in one.
The Loden family is so grateful for our players and volunteers who come back year after year to support the tournament and help us honor Jonathan’s memory. We are also thankful for the players who are new to the tournament. There are many golfers who have never met Jonathan, so for the last several years, we have someone who knew him well give those who didn’t some perspective on his life. This year, Andy Lombardo was the guest speaker and talked at length about their friendship and various escapades since meeting at Little League many years ago. It was so nice of Andy to share his memories with us, as there was much laughter, but also some tears.
A special thank you goes out to our friend Wayne Croswell, who has come to every tournament since the first one in 2006. This year he made the trip from New Hampshire, and gathered friends from several states that filled four foursomes. In 2015, we are hoping that his son Erik, who is kind enough to put together the JBLFoundation.com‘s website for us will be able to join us and play!
We can only hope that the Ninth Annual Jonathan B. Loden Memorial Golf Tournament on September 18, 2015 will be as successful as this year, as we are happy to report that a check for $15,000.00 will be sent to Johns Hopkins to be used for research at Dr. Chung’s discretion. See you then, and let’s make that a reality!
