The Fifth Annual Jonathan B. Loden Golf Tournament - September 24, 2010
September 24th, 2010, the morning of the Fifth Annual Jonathan B. Loden Golf Tournament at Turf Valley Country Club in Maryland, Ellicott City, dawned foggy and humid…but no rain! That problem has plagued us the last few years, especially in the morning, making for a hurried and damp registration. What a relief for a dry day. Little did we know that the temperature would nearly reach a record (94 humid degrees!), but it did not seem to hinder anyone’s play! Needless to say, the drink cart was in constant motion for the entire eighteen holes!
It is always gratifying to have new players join us every year, and one such foursome included the Hostler family from Lititz, PA. This family helps represent the purpose of Jonathan’s foundation and the tournament every year, which is to raise money to support head and neck cancer research at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital, under the direction of Dr. Arlene Forastiere. She was Jonathan’s doctor at Hopkins, and was able to come again this year to speak at the awards ceremony. We lost Jonathan to this disease in 2006, and it is our wish to help find a cure through research…and help prevent other families from losing loved ones too soon. Jean Hostler was a patient of Dr. Forastiere, and has been cancer free for over four years! We were honored to have Jean, her husband David, and children Lyle and Linette attend our tournament this year. Jonathan would be proud.
We are also very blessed to have the support of several players that we can count on every year, and we are so grateful for these golfers! The best example this year was David Doyle, who now lives in Hawaii, but still traveled a long distance to play in memory of Jonathan. Other states represented are Minnesota, New Hampshire, Florida, North Carolina, Delaware and Virginia.
The tournament would not be possible without the donations from many companies and several help us out year after year. Bryan’s company, HMSHost Corporation, was responsible for a great majority of the prizes and giveaways. Individuals within the company who went above and beyond are Jeff Yablun and Frank Sickelsmith … we thank them so much for their efforts. The HMSHost Business Development, Restaurant Development and the South Region also sponsored holes, in addition to supplying gifts and prizes.
Jay Kelley, who saw an article about the tournament in the local paper several years ago, has been donating all of our signage ever since through his company Signs by Tomorrow…. all because he and Jonathan were classmates years ago in middle school. Larry and Pam Tucker donated a set of Goodyear tires for the fourth year in a row, always one of our favorite prizes.
Peter Maller, of Heritage Financial Consultants, has played every year of the tournament and always sponsors a hole. Fitness Together, through Rob Coombs and Felicia Farace, donated sessions with a certified trainer, as well as a heart monitor. Jim and Sandy Cornelius also are generous year after year with their sponsorship, as are Rick and Margie Loden. Bare Bones and Cacao Lane, very popular restaurants in Ellicott City, were very helpful again this year and supplied us several gift certificates to use as prizes.
Our volunteers always give us their all, year after year, no matter what the weather! Returning this year were Robbie Blattau, Sandy Cornelius, Felicia Farace, Judy Haarer, Michele Mursch, Sherry Phillips, Jennifer Trenary, Janice Trenary, and Courtney Spencer. Newcomers this year included Allison McClune, Joan Schnorf and Sherri Trenary; they were great additions to the team! Felicia was also was responsible for over $1100.00 in donations from her customers at Fitness Together! Those generous people and businesses included Bette Dolan, Norma Hoff, Judith McGovern, Joan Schnorf, Martha Scanlon, Kristina Tyssowski and Central Maryland Addiction Counseling.
Last year we began asking someone who knew Jonathan well to share their thoughts and memories, and Jason Loden, Jonathan’s cousin, began the tradition. This year Jen Trenary did the honors, and she told a great story! It enables the people at the tournament who never had the privilege to know Jonathan to have a little more insight into the why we are so intent on keeping his memory alive. He was quite a character…if you ever knew him you would be unlikely to forget him!
Winners:
We are proud to say that the check to Dr. Forastiere for head and neck cancer research in memory of Jonathan was for $13,500.00 this year, putting us over the $50,000.00 mark that we have raised to date with the golf tournaments bearing his name. A donation will also be sent to SPOHNC-Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer, as in previous years.
We look forward to continuing our tradition next year with the Sixth Annual Jonathan B. Loden Golf Tournament. See you Friday, September 23, 2011 at Turf Valley!
