The Seventh Annual Jonathan B. Loden Tournament – September 21, 2012
Now in the books, the Seventh Annual Jonathan B. Loden Tournament was held on Friday, September 21, 2012 at Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City, Maryland. The weather was so horrendous last year that we changed the annual date from the last Friday in September to the third one to see if that would change our luck. It worked! The weather could not have been more perfect…about 75 degrees with a gentle breeze. It was so much better for the golfers to be able to play all eighteen holes this year instead of stopping at thirteen with the rain coming sideways!
Registration goes smoother every year, thanks to our long time volunteer coordinator Sandy Cornelius and volunteers who come back year after year-Jen Trenary Todd, Janice Bloodsworth, and Courtney Spencer. Felica Farace and Joan Schnorf of Fitness Together help at registration and also sell raffle tickets for free sessions with a personal trainer at their place of business. In addition, Felicia solicits donations from many clients that she trains. She has been very successful at this for the last four years!
We had some new comers to the registration line this year. Amber Baker helped give out shirts and then was our official photographer for this year’s event, doing a fantastic job. Megan Ledonn is our new Johns Hopkins liaison who jumped right in to help. I’ll bet she will be back next year, having had a really good time helping out on the course! Jen Trenary Todd’s mother-in-law, Ann Todd, of Bangor, N. Ireland, was also a great asset in the morning, helping on the registration line and then volunteering to be a witness on hole 17, our “hole- in- one hole”. Also helping us this year was Jen Fidley who flew in from Texas with her husband Troy who was one of our golfers. She assisted on hole 2-the one we call the “wig and skirt” hole. If the golfers don wigs and dresses, they can hit from the ladies tee. Hilarity ensues….
Ever year, unless her busy schedule prevents it, Jonathan’s doctor from Johns Hopkins, Arlene Forastiere, comes and speaks at the awards ceremony to give us an update on the advances in head and neck cancer research. Last year she announced that she would like to come and volunteer for the 2012 tournament. True to her word, Dr. Forastiere arrived by 8am to hand out shirts and drink tickets, and then sat on hole 17 for a few hours to witness any miracle shots. Ann and Arlene thought that it had happened, when Harry Garonzik hit the pin! Sadly it did not go in the hole!
The event this year produced some new winners in most categories.
For several years now, we award prizes to the team whose score is exactly in the middle of our high and low scores.
Every year, we have several golfers who fly in from many different places. This year, we had golfers from Missouri, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New York, Iowa, Texas, Ohio and Virginia. Jonathan’s cousin, Jason Loden, held the record for travelling the most miles for several tournaments, as he made the trip from Hong Kong, where he lived for several years! This year, that distinction went to the Todd family of Bangor, Northern Ireland. Jen Trenary Todd’s in –laws, and Graeme Todd’s parents-Drew and Ann Todd planned a trip to the US around our tournament! They visited New England and the Outer Banks before coming to Turf Valley for our tournament. Graeme’s brother, Stephen Todd, who lives in Londonderry, England, was in Washington, DC for a medical conference, and was also able to play. While the gentlemen were having fun on the course, Ann helped out at registration, as previously mentioned.

In addition, the Todds brought a gift from home to be given at the tournament this year. It was so beautiful and meant so much to us that we decided to keep it and give it to Bryan for his hard work and determination to have Jonathan’s foundation succeed with these events. It is beautiful cut glass crystal bowl from Belfast Crystal in Northern Ireland, engraved with the words- 'The Jonathan B. Loden Foundation'. We will cherish it.
Special thanks go to certain individuals within HMSHost, which is Bryan’s company. Frank Sickelsmith, Vice President of Adult Beverage and Restaurant Development for HMSHost, does a masterful job of acquiring gifts and giveaways from companies such as Budweiser, Sam Adams, Corona and Proximo Spirits.

From golf shirts to beach umbrellas….these prizes are an integral part of the success of our event each and every year. HMSHost executives Steve Johnson, Paul Mamalian, Stephanie Havard and Bill Casey are also huge supporters of our tournament, as they continually sponsor holes and foursomes every year. The Jonathan B. Loden Foundation and the Loden family sincerely thank everyone at HMSHost who do all that they do for us!
The Eighth Annual Jonathan B. Loden Memorial Golf Tournament will be held in September, 2013 at the same venue, the exact date to be determined soon. We are looking forward to seeing everyone again next year!
