The Ninth Annual Jonathan B. Loden Golf Tournament – September 18, 2015
We have another successful tournament in the books! Bright sunshine and balmy breezes were the order for the day and that is exactly what was delivered. Friday, September 18, 2015 was a beautiful day for golf at Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City, Maryland.
Our golfers usually come from far and wide, and this year was no exception. Many participants have been with us from the beginning to honor Jonathan’s memory, what a commitment! We especially would like to thank those golfers, as well as those who were here this year for the first time. The JBL tournament is still a success because of all of you. The Loden family is forever indebted to Bryan’s company, HMSHost Corporation. Without the support and donations made possible by many people there, the tournament as we know it would not be possible. We would also like to thank Wayne Croswell for designing and managing the new and improved JBLFoundation.com website, and for the Croswell Crusaders!
The volunteers are also such an important part of the day. We appreciate the yearly support of Sandy Cornelius, our volunteer coordinator, as well as Jen Trenary Todd, Janice Bloodsworth, Vicky Norton, Ann Todd, Roseann Preston, Judy Jensen, Amber Hays (also our official photographer), Nichole Bruno, Gale Clark and Sarah Trimmer. Thank you so much, ladies!
Dr. Arlene Forastiere, a medical oncologist at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital, was Jonathan’s doctor, and normally always attends the tournament to volunteer and speak at the awards ceremony. She was unable to come this year, but we met her for brunch beforehand so that she could fill us in on the latest research news regarding head and neck cancers. Scientists and doctors now know that the HPV virus accounts for a large percentage of oral cancers in young people, like Jonathan. Sarah Trimmer handed out a letter written by her to all of the golfers, as well as information from the Center of Disease Control’s website, regarding the importance of the HPV vaccine for our children. Dr. Bill Waterfield, also an oncologist as well as a family friend, spoke on this same topic. It is vital to get this important information out to the public! There is a way to help prevent another family from losing a son, daughter, brother, sister, father or mother to a cancer caused by the human papillomavirus. This is certainly our mission now, to honor Jonathan’s memory. The letter and the handout are included this year in our wrap up, as well as a link to the CDC’s information on the SAFETY and importance of the vaccine for young boys as well as girls! Please take some time to read this invaluable information.
Another part of the JBL tournament that has become tradition is a talk at the awards ceremony given by someone who knew Jonathan almost as well as the immediate family. Although many golfers have been with us since the first year, there are some who never knew him in person. This year, it was our pleasure to have Jon’s good friend Mike Davies do the honors and his speech was awesome. Funny, entertaining, bittersweet memories for many of us, and a new perspective on the man we were all there to honor if they did not know Jonathan before. Thank you, Mike for being such a good, loyal friend to Jonathan!
Without further ado….the award winners of the 2015 JBL…
